UCSF medical residencies based at San Francisco General Hospital have a long tradition of attracting and training physician-leaders with interests in care for vulnerable populations. The new STEP UP (SFGH Training and Education Programs for Underserved Populations) initiative brings residents from across SFGH together for shared learning on issues related to serving at-risk and marginalized patients. Since its inception in late 2014, STEP UP has helped sponsor several Grand Rounds focused on equity and inclusion and has coordinated shared learning sessions across residency programs. In October, Iman Nazeeri-Simmons, SFGH Chief Operating Officer and Curtis Chan, Medical Director of Maternal, Child & Adolescent Health for the San Francisco Department of Public Health met with residents across departments to discuss leadership related to health care in safety net settings. In November, Berkeley Media Studies Group provided a training on media framing—what it is and why it matters—for Internal Medicine, Family and Community Medicine and Pediatric residents. Upcoming STEP UP shared curricular sessions are slated for February 19 and June 10, 2016.
