On November 13th, three programs based in the Department of Family and Community Medicine - the Center for Excellence in Primary Care, the Family and Community Medicine Residency Program and STEP UP - came together to sponsor a Grand Rounds on the intersection of race and medical education. Speakers Renee Navarro, MD, UCSF's Vice Chancellor Diversity and Outreach, and Rene Salazar, MD, Director of Diversity for UCSF GME discussed how our biases, known and unknown, affect academics, medical practice and workplace culture. The discussion touched on how microaggressions lead to hostile work environments for both colleagues and patients, how we must improve curricula to empower students to speak up when they see racism in practice, and the need for better faculty training around these important discussions. UCSF is working to address these issues through a variety of initiatives led by the Office of Diversity and Outreach. A WebEx recording of the November 13th Grand Rounds is available at http://stepup.ucsf.edu/content/sfgh-grand-rounds-race-and-medical-education.
