Congratulations to Laura Gottlieb

Congratulations to Department of Family and Community Medicine faculty member Laura Gottlieb on her election to the National Academy of Medicine!

In October, 2019, the National Academy of Medicine announced that UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine faculty department member Laura Gottlieb, MD, MPH as a newly elected Academy member.  Election to the National Academy of Medicine (formerly known as the Institute of Medicine) is one of the highest United States honors for individuals working in the health field, recognizing people who have done pioneering and high-impact work. The Academy cited Dr. Gottlieb’s cutting edge work in translational research and its application to policy and practice in the area of addressing social determinants in clinical settings. They noted her accomplishments as “founding director of the Social Interventions Research and Evaluation Network (SIREN), which aims to improve health and health equity by advancing research at the intersection of social and medical care. Her research focuses on evaluating programs and policies that help identify and address social risk factors in care delivery. Recent work has addressed issues ranging from food insecurity in health care settings to bias in medical coding.”

We are fortunate to have Dr. Gottlieb as a member of our faculty. She has worked diligently to apply her work locally to benefit our own health systems in the SF Health Network and UCSF Health in addition to her work having a national impact, and has also led curricula to enhance the skills of trainees at UCSF to address the social needs of their patients and communities.
