The Department of Family & Community Medicine welcomes the participation of our Volunteer Clinical Faculty (VCF) members and recognizes their contribution as critical to our mission of teaching family medicine to UCSF medical students and residents. From facilitating small-group learning in the first two years of medical school, to hosting students in their primary care clinics during 3rd year, to supervising the learning of individual medical competencies, our volunteer faculty generously pass on their expertise in primary care to the next generation of clinicians. Volunteer faculty precept UCSF medical students at many private practice sites, community clinics, county hospitals and Kaiser Permanente Medical Centers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as at our affiliate residency programs.
We sincerely appreciate the dedication and commitment for teaching, so generously offered by our Volunteer Clinical Faculty. The positive learning environment sets the stage for effective and compassionate care for generations to come.
Thank you!

Volunteer Opportunities
There are ongoing volunteer opportunities available for practicing Bay Area family medicine physicians who would like to teach UCSF medical students as they rotate through our department. This usually involves having a 3rd year medical student work with you and your patients in your clinic 1-3 days per week in 6 week blocks. We run 6 blocks per year through our traditional 3rd year clerkship and work with you to coordinate available schedules. In addition, we also have more longitudinal programs in 3rd year, which some students choose in order to cover their required family medicine clinical clerkship. These programs range from 6 months to 1 year and provide longer term precepting with individual students.
If you are interested in teaching our 3rd year students and would like to discuss this possibility for your site, please contact Irina Worthey.
