The Role of the Family Physician Researcher

(L-R) Family medicine physician-researchers Christine Dehlendorf, Kevin Grumbach, Hunter Holt, Michael Potter, Anjana Sharma dispelled misconceptions about resarch during our May Grand Rounds.

Family physicians are uniquely placed to understand what research can improve the healthcare system's ability to provide equitable patient-centered primary care. The generalist and community-oriented nature of the specialty affords family physician researchers an expansive view of the healthcare system and enables them to target impactful, systems-level change.

At our May 2024 Grand Rounds, family physician researchers Kevin Grumbach MD, Hunter Holt MD MAS, Michael Potter MD, and Anjana Sharma MD MAS discussed what inspired their path, how their dual roles interact and influence one another, and how their work has helped advance health equity. Moderated by UCSF Family and Community Medicine (FCM) Vice Chair of Research Christine Dehlendorf MD, MAS, their conversation helps paint a clearer picture of the role of a family physician-researcher and its impact on public health, policy, practice, and beyond.
