Dr. Teresa Villela To Be Inducted into UCSF Gold Headed Cane Society

Dr. Teresa Villela has been selected for membership in the prestigious UCSF Gold Headed Cane Society. This honor is reserved for two distinguished faculty members each year who embody the core values of the “true physician”—a tradition that has stood strong for 85 years. The recognition is a testament to Dr. Villela’s extraordinary contributions to medicine, mentorship, and patient care.

The selection, led by Dr. Andrea Jackson and the unanimous endorsement of the Executive Committee of the Gold Headed Cane Society, recognizes Dr. Villela’s decades-long dedication to shaping the future of family medicine. From her early years as Residency Program Director to her current leadership as Vice Chair of the Family and Community Medicine (FCM) department and Chief of Services at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, Dr. Villela has continually inspired her peers and mentees alike.

Colleagues describe her as a compassionate leader, a powerful advocate for community-centered care, and a true mentor who has guided countless residents and faculty with love, empathy, and integrity. Her efforts in integrating behavioral health into FCM training and her commitment to culturally responsive care—particularly for Latine patients—highlight her holistic and inclusive approach to medicine.

“She listens deeply, leads with humility, and fosters an environment where everyone feels valued and heard,” shared one nominator. “Her presence alone elevates those around her.”

Dr. Villela will be formally inducted into the Gold Headed Cane Society on May 5th.
