The UCSF Department of Family & Community Medicine has officially opened the application period for its Faculty Development Fellowship, inviting early-career educators and faculty champions to apply for the 2026–27 cohort.
Now accepting applications from January 5 through February 23, this one-year fellowship offers a structured, immersive experience designed to help faculty strengthen their teaching, leadership, and educational skills within family medicine and primary care settings.
The program brings together up to 18 fellows annually, selected from family medicine residency programs and other primary care departments. Priority consideration is given to faculty currently engaged in teaching roles. Applicants must be sponsored by their residency director or program chair.
Fellows participate in eight three-day residential sessions held monthly from October through May at the Ralston White Retreat Center on Mt. Tamalpais in Mill Valley, California. These sessions focus on adult learning theory, curriculum development, leadership competencies, reflective practice, and experiential learning — merging theory with practical applications.
“We know that early-career faculty life can be a challenge,” said program leaders, pointing to the fellowship’s mission of building educator confidence, fostering supportive peer networks, and preparing clinicians for roles as teachers and academic leaders.
The tuition fee for the program is $17,500, which covers faculty instruction, educational materials, facility use, and related costs. The fellowship also offers options for intensive, customized faculty development tailored to institutional needs.
Many past fellows have gone on to assume leadership positions in medical education across California and beyond, serving as curriculum designers, residency directors, and scholarly educators.
