The UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine is proud to announce that Manuel Tapia, MD, MPH, has been appointed the Stephen and Faith Brown Professor of Family and Community Medicine, effective September 23, 2026.

An endowed professorship is one of the University’s highest academic honors, recognizing exceptional faculty contributions while providing enduring support for continued impact in research, education, clinical care, and service. The Stephen and Faith Brown Endowed Professorship was established to support an early- to mid-career faculty member dedicated to advancing the field of family and community medicine.

Selected through a competitive process, Tapia has demonstrated a deep commitment to UCSF’s mission and to the patients, learners, colleagues, and communities he serves. His work reflects the values of family and community medicine and the far-reaching impact of the discipline.

The Department extends its gratitude to Stephen and Faith Brown for their generosity and investment in the future of family and community medicine and congratulates Dr. Tapia on this distinguished and well-deserved honor.

Moe about Dr. Tapia

Dr. Tapia has dedicated his career to community engagement, mentorship, public service, and improving health in the communities we serve. His leadership spans clinical care, medical education, and community partnerships.

He is an influential leader in the UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine and is a member of the UCSF Latin Center of Excellence Administrative Core Faculty. He also serves as Medical Director and Faculty Advisor for the student-run Clínica Martín-Baró, which serves recent immigrants and Spanish-speaking communities in San Francisco’s Mission District.

Dr. Tapia practices primary care at Southeast Health Center in Bayview–Hunters Point and teaches at San Francisco General with the UCSF Family and Community Medicine Residency Program.

In 2024, Dr. Tapia received the Thomas N. Burbridge Award as part of the UCSF Founders Day Awards, recognizing his public service, work to advance Latinx community health equity, and mentorship.
