The UCSF program for the Share, Trust, Organize, Partner, COVID-19 California Alliance (STOP COVID-19 CA) was established in September 2020 with funding from the National Institutes of Health Community Engagement Alliance Against COVID-19 Disparities (CEAL). STOP COVID-19 CA includes eleven academic and healthcare systems across the state each in partnership with community stakeholders, focused on strengthening engagement of diverse communities to reduce COVID-19 inequities.

In partnership with three community-based organizations, NICOS Chinese Health Coalition, Instituto Familiar de la Raza, and Rafiki Coalition for Health and Wellness, the UCSF STOP COVID team set out to explore community views about COVID-19 vaccination, including barriers, facilitators, trusted messengers, and other issues affecting interest in and access to vaccination. The learnings from this community-based participatory research (CBPR) project were disseminated in four policy briefs and other formats. Our findings informed the development and refinement of educational strategies addressing COVID-19 vaccination outreach strategies conducted by local, state and federal public health agencies, community organizations, faith-based networks, health care and health sciences organizations, and others. The overarching goal was to develop, based on the learnings of our CBPR project, best practices for culturally tailored outreach strategies informed by community members and co-created with community partners that facilitate respectful, informed decision-making about COVID-19 vaccination.

In 2025, the STOP COVID team published its research findings. Download the report:
