About Our Track

UCSF Family and Community Medicine (FCM) has a highly successful, well-established residency program at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. We are now starting a new track begining in June 2026 with 6 residents per year at UCSF Lakeshore and the San Francisco VA.

Lakeshore is a full-spectrum, community-based, academic family medicine practice that serves a diverse mix of patients and insurance types. It has been a highly rated medical student teaching site for more than two decades.

Track Highlights

Clinic-first Curriculum

Dedicated full day of continuity clinic per week at minimum and panel building starting day 1
Designed to prioritize what matters most: longitudinal, relationship-centered care. At the UCSF Lakeshore and VA Family Medicine Residency Track, residents spend a dedicated full day each week in continuity clinic throughout all three years of training—ensuring consistent, meaningful engagement with their patient panels from day one.
This model reflects our belief that deep continuity fosters deeper learning, stronger patient-provider relationships, and better outcomes for patients. Rather than treating clinic as a rotation, we treat it as a home base where residents grow their identity as family physicians and build enduring relationships with patients, clinic staff and preceptors, and the community.
This structure also empowers residents to develop the clinical, interpersonal, and systems-based skills essential for providing full-spectrum, patient-centered care in any setting.
Key features of our Clinic-First model:
- One full day of clinic per week on inpatient rotations, more on outpatient rotations
- Consistent continuity clinic day across all 3 years of training
- Full day of clinic allows for full immersion in clinic without carrying your pager or rushing from the hospital to clinic 
- Active participation in high-functioning primary care teams that model collaborative, patient-centered care
- Strong mentorship from core clinic preceptors who know you and your patients well

Rotation Sites

UCSF Family Medicine Center at Lakeshore

Located in the Outer Sunset neighborhood in San Francisco, our clinic serves a diverse patient population. Most patients live in the south and west sides of the city.

Our patients speak a number of different languages. After English, the most commonly spoken languages are Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, and Spanish. We have robust telephone interpreter services to support high-quality accessible communication and care for patients with limited English proficiency.

About 20% of our patients are insured by Medicare, and about 10% are insured by Medicaid. The remainder of our patients are insured by employer-sponsored plans or other private health insurance.

Apply

All first-year resident positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). UCSF Family and Community Medicine Residency. Lakeshore/VA track accepts only those applications transmitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We have six first-year resident openings this year. Please note that the application and interview process for this track is separate from the main UCSF FCM residency program at SFGH. Students interested in both the main residency at SFGH and this track will need to apply to each individually.

Three Letters of Reference (recommendations from family physicians are especially encouraged)
USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level I score 
USMLE Step II or COMLEX Level II scores are required prior to February 2026; consistent with UCSF policy, only applicants with passing Step II scores will be placed on our Rank Order List

Salary and Benefits

The UCSF School of Medicine is sensitive to the high cost of living in San Francisco, as well as the financial strain on most residents. We strive to provide a competitive salary, housing stipends, and other benefits to recruit and retain the highest caliber of future family physicians to our program. Resident salaries and benefits are negotiated at the institutional level for all UCSF residents and clinical fellows. 

Salaries

PGY-1     $92,284.00 (including housing stipend)
PGY-2     $94,777.00 (including housing stipend)
PGY-3     $97,829.00 (including housing stipend)

*Please note: these salaries are based on the 2024-25 UC salary scale.

Sub-internship

We are recruiting medical students to participate in the 4-week Sub-Internship starting March 31, 2025. Students function as interns and assume a high level of responsibility in providing primary, preventive and acute care in an outpatient setting. Students will experience the diverse scope of family practice, such as rotating on the inpatient Addiction Medicine service in the hospital, engaging with community health initiatives, and working with our integrated behavioral health clinicians.
